The kid behind Vacation Bible School

Absolut the llama, who livened up Vacation Bible School, gets some loving at First UMC Bonham.

Youth attending the Kirkwood and Good Shepherd Lutheran Vacation Bible School learned to make bricks.

Aranza Barragan, with her brother Alexis, prompted Kirkwood UMC to hold VBS after all.

In keeping with its Egyptian theme, the Kirkwood VBS had some “mummies.”

“La pastora, why do I have to go to another church for VBS? Why can’t we have VBS at our church?” That question from 11-year-old Aranza Barragan inspired Kirkwood UMC to hold Vacation Bible School this summer, says Rev. Terry Ann Moore, pastor of the Irving church. It had been eight years since the congregation last had a VBS. The Kirkwood congregation, which has Sunday services in Spanish and English, teamed with a neighboring Lutheran congregation, Good Shepherd, in the effort. “We had 26 kids preregistered, but each night we averaged 40 kids and 50 adults,” Rev. Moore said. As a result, the church has seen an upswing in children participating in worship and created a children’s choir.

The llama that came to VBS
Absolut the therapy llama was one of the biggest hits at the First UMC Bonham Vacation Bible School. The VBS children helped tell Absolut Jesus’ Parable of the Sower, then took turns stroking his soft fur. Owner Kay Carrell, an artist-designer who also created the logo for the church’s “A New Comfort Zone in God’s Kingdom” capital campaign, takes Absolut to nursing homes, children’s activities and other places where petting a docile, well-mannered llama brings peace and contentment.
